Lake Chabot’s water is fed into the East Bay Municipal Utility District water system. The park encompasses the reservoir Lake Chabot. The northern portion of the park is in Oakland. The southern portion is next to San Leandro and Castro Valley. Of the many things to do in Castro Valley, hiking at Lake Chabot is definitely one of the more exciting outdoors adventures in the East Bay.

About Lake Chabot

The reservoir Lake Chabot dates back to 1874/75. It was then the primary water source for East Bay. The lake spans a total area of 315 acres. The lake and its surrounding areas were not open for recreational purposes till 1960s. The lake has abundant catfish, trout, crappie, bass and other species of fish. While swimming is prohibited owing to the presence of toxic algae in the waters, the annual spring fishing derby is quite popular among locals and tourists. You can explore the fishing piers at the park.

The star attractions at Lake Chabot Regional Park are the scenic walk, the history walk and the hikes, canoeing and boating. There is a play area at the park, jogging tracks or running trails, bicycling paths, horseshoe pits, picnicking areas and lake tours on a boat. The Redwood Canyon Public Golf Courses, formerly called Willow Park Golf Course, is within the park.

You can rent fishing equipment at the Marina Café. You can also enjoy a sumptuous lunch, breakfast or quick snacks. You can ret boats or sign up for a chartered tour. There are kayaks, row boats, pedal boats, canoes and powered boats. Inflatable boats are not available and also not allowed. You may also want to test your golfing skills at the 18-hole Redwood Canyon Public Golf Course.

There are more than twenty miles of trails around Lake Chabot, excluding the seventy miles in the Anthony Chabot Regional Park north of Lake Chabot. The popular trails are West Shore and East Shore, Lake Chabot bicycle loop, Live Oak Trail, Honker Bay Trail and you can venture beyond the park to Skyline National Trail in Anthony Chabot Regional Park.
