Castro Valley and the charming city of San Leandro are located in the Bay Area in Northern California. With easy access to surrounding cities of Oakland, San Francisco, San Jose and Hayward, San Leandro is a perfect travel destination with areas for boating, fishing, and sightseeing still within proximity to a primarily technology-driven area. During your stay, learn about the rich culture of neighboring city Hayward, California, at the Historical Society.

Historical Society in Hayward, California

The Historical Society in Hayward, California, is a nonprofit organization whose focus is to document and preserve the history of the quaint city and adjacent communities. As their mission statement explains: “The Hayward Area Historical Society promotes an understanding of the shared history and the challenges and opportunities of the future by collecting, preserving and interpreting the diverse heritage of the East Bay community.”
The History Gallery compiles stories collected from all over the community to cover a wide-range of history and is presented in the exhibit as chapters in a book: Enterprise, Home, Education, Leisure, Infrastructure, Agriculture and Turning Points. In addition to the curator, stories are told in the form of short quotes accompanied by photographs and artifacts from the area.

The Children’s Gallery, Our Town, provides a hands-on learning space with four themed areas where children can explore the community history. They can check baggage and individual history at the Hayward’s Hotel, do business at Holmes Grocery Store, learn about agriculture and the canning industry in The Cannery, and learn about our natural environment and catch “fish” in a reimagined section of San Lorenzo Creek.

There are also temporary exhibits featuring Hayward Arts Council’s members as well as a look into some of our original Americans – the Japanese – and how they helped shape our culture, and the area, today.

Don’t forget to stop by The Cannery Cafe for Breakfast and Lunch and enjoy locally sourced, gourmet meals from chefs who grew up, and trained, within the community.
